Fan History is a fandom history repository and fandom person directory. Laura Hale discussed the wiki with a number of people at RCC. Some of the following things came up.
Funny Stuff - Wiki people love slash. The stranger the pairing, the happier they are.
- Wiki people can have interesting debates regarding if Pikachu slash is possible because there is a question regarding Pikachu's gender.
- Wiki people don't know enough about fandom wank to avoid it or court in order to promote their wikis.
- Wiki people think fandom is dominated by guy wiki people because there are just so many of them.
- Wiki people think music fandom should dominate the wiki world and that anime people might need to be tamed by wiki wranglers.
Serious Things - Fan History has a unique set of issues when it comes to community development. Fan History cannot develop a traditional community because of issues regarding bias.
- Fan History is like several other fandom canon type wikis where the organization was developed organically on an as needed basis.
- Fan History developed its rules as the community using the wiki became more organized and as needed arose. This stands in contrast to other wiki projects like About Us which developed the rules before the community was created. Each method has certain advantages and disadvantages.
- Fan History's administrators work on marketing of the wiki more than some other smaller wikis. Fan History's focus on marketing has helped the wiki maintain interest and gain new users. Lack of marketing can lead to a wiki dying through lack of interest.
- Wikis have similar stages of growth. It is important to identify and plan for wiki growth. Fan History has done a good job of this so far.
- When dealing with real people, there are a unique set of challenges that are presented. It is important to develop and articulate rules regarding this early and be open to discussing these issues with your contributors. Fan History has done that so far.
- Open communication is important. Be honest at all stages with your purpose and goals. It will encourage people to edit and prevent accusations of bias by already having that clearly articulated. Doing this has been to Fan History's advantage.
